Hello Freetown Elementary School Community

As an entire school community we are very excited about the upcoming school year. Whether this is your first year of schooling for your kindergarten/preschool child or you are a veteran parent of a school-aged child, the start of a new school year is always a time filled with excitement and some nerves. 

Our focus at the early elementary level is to provide each child with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience. Together, we want your child to be happy, love school, and be successful at Freetown Elementary. Parents/Guardians play a key role in our school community. That role is to continually show interest in and support your child. A child who knows his/her family is interested in and supports school programs and staff, will almost always enjoy greater success at school. 

As the principal of Freetown Elementary School, I continue to be inspired by the dedicated staff and families in the Freetown Community. Freetown Elementary is a school where students are supported and encouraged to take risks and to grow in all areas - academically, socially, and emotionally. I am fortunate to be a part of this high-quality learning community. "It takes a village," to help each and every child reach his/her potential, and we look forward to sharing and being a part of your child's learning experiences.

School News and Updates

  • FES Student School Hours: 9:20 - 3:30 PM each day. Parent/Guardian Drop-off: 9:15 - 9:25 AM (Memorial Drive Doors). Any child arriving after 9:25 AM will be considered tardy and will need to sign-in at the front office.
  • Parent/Guardian Pick-up Routine on Memorial Drive. A gentle reminder for any family participating in the Parent Pick-Up Dismissal. Please park your vehicle in a designated parking space and then walk to the Memorial Drive doors. Upon coming to the doors you will see two lines. One line for K-1 families. Another line for 2-3 families. Preschool families are let out the gym door with the ramp. Once at your appropriate door there you will identify your child and yourself, please ensure you bring a valid ID card for identification purposes and your child will come out to you once cleared. Although the process may be a bit slow right now in a couple of weeks the pick-up process will be smooth and efficient.
  • Dismissal Routine: Does your child know how they are getting home? Please communicate this with your child and child's teacher. If there is a change in your child’s pick-up routine please send in a note, in writing, to your child’s classroom teacher. That note will be sent to the office. Please refrain from sending an email to the office. At times, emails are not delivered, the email may not get opened in a timely manner, or the person receiving the email may be out of work for the day. Freetown Elementary is aware that emergency situations do take place and with that please call the main office directly and we will be able to assist you.
  • Summer Operation Success (Summer Reading/Math/Life Skills Challenge) Students entering grades 1-3 were posed with completing a Summer Success Packet. If your child did complete the summer work please return it to school over the course of the first few days. Your child can simply give it to their classroom teacher. We will absolutely accept Summer Work Packets beyond the first day of school. We understand summer is a well deserved time off for students and families. Our hope with summer work is to keep them engaged with some light work and to keep them sharp with the skills learned over the school year. What will they receive? FES Bracelet Fox!
  • Bus Transportation: Bus stop information is available online by visiting the Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District Website. Also, please be patient with buses picking up your child in the morning as well as when arriving home from school. Please know we are ensuring the safety of our students by being overly cautious as to which bus we place students. In due time, our bus departure time will be smooth and efficient.

August 25: Kindergarten Pops on the Playground from 10:00 - 11:30 AM
August 31: Back to School Night for students in Grades 1-3 from 4:00 - 5:30 PM.
September 2: First Day of School for students in grades 1-3.
September 3: Kindergarten Orientation at 10:00 AM.
September 3: Preschool Orientation times will vary depending on the AM/PM Preschool.
September 7: No School - Labor Day
September 8: Preschool and Kindergarten First Day of School.
September 14: September PTO Meeting beginning at 6:30 PM
September 24: Preschool Open House
September 25: Individual Picture Day (Lifetouch)

Attendance Matters

Each week parents/guardians/caregivers will be given the average daily attendance percentage for Freetown Elementary School. Our goal is that each day 94% of our student population attends school daily. We have been very successful the past couple of years reaching our goal. Please remember if your child is going to be absent for any reason please call Nurse Allie (508.763-5121 Ext. 5400) to make her aware of the absence. FES will begin to share the daily average attendance for the week in next week’s Thursday Messagel.

So we are all on the same page to start the school year, the Attendance Policy is as follows:
- After 5 absences (excused or unexcused) letter home
- 8th absence - phone call from administration
- 11th absence - face to face meeting with administration
- 14th absence - phone call from administration
- 17th absence - check-in again from administration
- 18th absence - possible filing of a Child Requiring Assistance (CRA) with family and juvenile court

In the end we hope each day students come to school each day so they can become the possible student they can be. Yes, we are aware students get sick or feel under the weather and they need to be absent. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) monitors if students are chronically absent. What is chronically absent? Missing 10% of the school year. With that being said, there are 180 school days thus students should not be absent more than 18 days (10%) over the course of the 180 day school year.

 

FES School Day Schedule

Freetown Elementary School runs on a Day to Day Schedule. The Day Schedule is wrapped around specials that can be defined as Physical Education Class, Music Class, and Art Class. Each classroom has a different schedule. Your child's classroom teacher will share with you the assigned days for specials. Soon your child is will become very familiar with the schedule.

Breakfast / Lunch

Breakfast: Breakfast will begin the week of September 7th for all students. Breakfast is available for free for all students. Students that ride the bus will be offered breakfast upon their arrival to school. Please make sure you have the conversation with your child about breakfast. If you are dropping off your child to school, drop-off students may still have breakfast. If drop-off students are interested in breakfast the caretake can simply drop them off at the front entrance beginning at 9:10 AM. The breakfast door will close at 9:15 AM for drop-offs.

Lunch: School lunch will be served beginning the first day of school, September 2nd. Lunch is free for all students. Again, please have the conversation with your child about school lunch. They will have four (4) to choose from: Main selection, bagel, salad, or sandwich. The lunch menu can be found on the Freetown-Lakeville District website.
 

Anonymous Bullying Form

As outlined in the Freetown Elementary School Handbook there is a policy on Bullying. Bullying is not tolerated at FES and/or within the FLRSD School District. If you believe that your child is being "Bullied" there is an anonymous Bullying form that parents/guardians can fill out on-line.

Thursday Message Moving Forward...
