School News and Updates

Living in New England brings the seasonal changes that we have grown accustomed to, or for some, maybe we are just wishing for warmer weather. But, like it or not, the fall-like weather is upon us. As a gentle reminder, our students will be going outside for recess as long as the weather permits. With that said, please dress your child appropriately each day for outdoor activities.

Reminder no school for students on Tuesday, November 3rd.  Staff within FLRSD have a professional development day.

Gentle Reminder that Preschool Picture Day will take place on Thursday, November 5th. This individual picture day for preschoolers will also be the picture retake day for all other students.

The Week of November 9-13 will be a fun week at Freetown Elementary School.  During that week it will be Scholastic Book Fair Week in which students will visit the Book Fair with their classmates as well as the opportunity to join for the Family Book Fair Night on Thursday, November 12th from 5:30 - 7:00 PM.  Also, that week will be Fire Safety Week in which the Freetown Fire Department will meet with each classroom to discuss fire safety!

Prek: This week in preschool, we celebrated Halloween by wearing costumes and playing Halloween themed games.  We studied the parts of a pumpkin, and investigated what is inside.  We also learned about the letter F.

Kindergarten: This week in Kindergarten we learned about the high frequency word a and learned about the letters a & g.  In math, we were comparing numbers within 5 and talking about more than or less than.  Our week ended with some fun Halloween festivities!!

Grade 1: This week in first grade we started digraphs in FUNdations. For comprehension we discussed key details and predicting what will happen in stories. In writing we are working on writing complete sentences. For math this week we worked on adding three numbers. In science, we cut open our pumpkins and investigated what was inside.

Grade 2: This week second graders are practicing skip counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s. We practiced adding and subtracting 10 and 100 from a number. In phonics students continued to read and spell words with suffixes and specifically focused on the 3 sounds of the suffix -ed: /d/, /t/, and /id/. In reading we practiced retelling fiction stories. In writing we continued writing stories and learned about subject and predicate. In science students continued to learn about how wind and water change the shape of the land.

Grade 3: This week in math, third graders explored different types of patterns with numbers and shapes. They also reviewed for their unit 1 test, which consisted of using strategies to solve a variety of multiplication and division problems, as well as finding rules for patterns. In reading, we began a new unit, and the first essential question that we explored is, “How do people make government work?” In writing, students published and presented their first complete stories from their writing journals. In Social Studies we began to learn about the Pilgrims and their voyage.

Art: Kindergarteners found and colored in shapes from last week’s painting.  Grade 1 had fun creating symmetrical shape monsters with stencils.  Grade 2 learned about radial design as they started a paper Mexican mirror project.  Grade got very creative with their symmetrical name creatures.

Physical Education: Kindergarten students learned about types of emotions and how to recognize them in the faces of friends. First graders talked about bones and the skeleton and learned that the skeleton is made up of 206 bones. Second graders learned about dairy foods, calcium and Vitamin D and how they help make bones stronger. Third grade students learned the jobs of bones, and the parts of the skeleton. All classes then played a game called Skeleton Run which required sprinting, a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, and teamwork to put a skeleton puzzle together.
